The Rebuild

Every panel, every sofa, every light. One coach, taken apart and put back together as something else entirely.

The Build

Stripped Back and
Started Again

A 1968 Plaxton Panorama is a beautiful thing to look at and a difficult thing to live with. Turning one into a working venue meant taking the interior out entirely and starting from the shell.

What went back in was wooden flooring, velvet theatre sofas, Art Deco wallpaper, a mahogany bar, a six octave piano, thirteen internal speakers, acoustic insulation, heating, air conditioning, refrigeration, a thousand litre water tank and a battery array big enough to run all of it for around thirty six hours without a hook up.

It was built by Laurence McMahon, known on stage as The Great Lorenzo, a Cromer based cabaret performer who has spent his working life in the kind of venues this bus was meant to replace. Every decision came from that. The quiet room exists because performers need to warm up. The bar is where it is because that is where people gather.

Then It Got
Put Back Together

Not everything in the bus's history has been kind. At one point it was vandalised, which for a vehicle that is somebody's workplace, instrument and life's work is a fairly bleak morning to wake up to.

What happened next is the part worth telling. People offered to help before anyone asked. A fundraiser went up because so many people suggested it that it seemed rude not to, and the bus was back on the road for the following season.

It is mentioned here for one reason only. A green room is not really a vehicle, it is a place people become fond of. Artists remember it, festival crews look after it, and a surprising number of strangers have chipped in to keep it running. That is not a bad reference.
